Even with just the word 'Einstein', thoughts of genius and creativity spring to mind, and the connotations are not without foundation. Albert Einstein was perhaps the greatest mind of the 20th Century and also one the greatest in history! As a theoretical physicist Einstein created the General Theory of Relativity (a geometric theory of gravitation), and today it remains a pillar of modern physics.
His work was a fundamental influence on the Philosophy of Science; a branch of philosophy concerned with the methods and implications of science. Yet in the general sense Einstein is more commonly associated with his mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2
The formula is often called 'the world's most famous equation'! For his work Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his 'services to theoretical physics'. In particular, the award was for his work in the evolution of quantum theory!
In the cultural sense Einstein is also credited for his role in the Manhattan Project and the development of the nuclear bomb. In the late 1930's Einstein wrote a letter to then President Franklin Roosevelt warning him of the potential creation of an extremely powerful type of bomb and encouraged him to begin similar research. Sadly for Einstein however, his letter was the first step on the path to the worlds most deadly weapon. Thereafter, he denounced the use of nuclear fission as a weapon and worked to highlight the danger of nuclear weapons!
Einstein today is regarded as the 'go-to' genius and example of an eccentric scientist. His work was ground breaking and continues to influence many scientific endeavours. To sum up his character and legacy Einstein's own words seem rather fitting:
"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination"
Perhaps then it is best to celebrate the genius of Einstein in imaginative ways, such as a bold and colourful tattoo! Here are ten of the best Einstein tattoos out there!!
