40 Enticing Peacock Tattoos
The peacock, often chosen for big tattoo pieces with its tail and colors, is clearly a statement tattoo.
Most often coveted by women, it carries a lot of meaning, depending on civilizations, beliefs and people. If you plan to have this gorgeous animal inked forever, there are some things that you might want to learn about it.
The peacock is the male peafowl. It is a flying bird native to Asia, famous for its impressive tail of feathers displayed for the courtship of the female, the peahen, its vibrant colors and its majestic walk. The peacock can also be white, whilst not albino.
In Persia, peacock was the symbol of nobility and royalty, often used to decorate the possessions of the kings and leading feagures. When the peacock has been introducted in Europe, it kept this reputation of the kings bird, often use to mock monarchy.
Incidentally, it was the favorite animal and symbol of Ancient Greece and Roman mythology goddess Hera/Juno, the queen of the gods, famous for her jealousy and protector of women, especially mothers. An ability that Chinese beliefs extend to the peacock itself, an animal bringing good luck to expecting mothers.
In Buddhism, the peacock is the companion of goddess of compassion Kuan-Yin and a symbol of expansive consciousness. In Hinduism, it is associated with goddess Lakshmi, to kindness and to inner beauty.
As the bird is replacing its feathers every year, it is also seen as a symbol of renewal, and even of immortality and resurrection, making him a close cousin of the phoenix.
Its feathers themselves are sharing both positive and negative meanings. For Asian philosophies, the eyes of the feathers are a symbol of foresight and watchfulness, while Christians see them as the eyes of God and Oriental philosophies as the eye of Evil. By the way, peacock is the symbol of Satan in Islam.
In modern meanings, peacock is both a symbol of vanity (‘proud as a peacock’), seduction, beauty, luxury, grace and sensuality. This is why you often find peacocks tattoos on intimate places such as hips or extending to the buttocks, making it a very erotic tattoo.
If you want to show your inner beauty, increase your external beauty or just your self confidence, the peacock is a bold and fantastic feminine tattoo.
