15 Majestic Bison Tattoos
Strong, proud and often mistaken as a buffalo the bison is a symbol of North America and an animal of great beauty. The American Bison is arguably the best known of the bison species and frequently referred to as a buffalo, though in truth the bison and buffalo are only distantly related. Of the six known species of bison four are today extinct, a reminder of the sad history of the animal that ruled the American plains.
For centuries Native Americans lived because of the large bison population, they would follow the animals and hunt only what they needed for meat and fur. In the 16th century there were an estimated 25-30 million bison in North America. But after successive centuries of hunting the American bison population was reduced to mere hundreds, it has been estimated that the number of bison hunted and killed in North America could be upwards of 50 million!! Yet, it was not hunting alone that hastened the decline of the great bison but reduction of habitat, increased farming and over hunting by Native American tribes themselves.
The decline of the great American bison is a sad part of North American history, but attempts to revive and increase the bison population have been highly successful and have increased the number of bison to well over 150,000!! So lets celebrate the resurgence of America's symbolic beast with some kick ass bison ink!
