Even after overcoming such a tough battle as breast cancer is the road to recovery is a long and complex process, being given the all clear is not where the hard times end. Breast surgeries and mastectomies take as long to heal emotionally as they do physically. In recent years however, there has been a growing percentage of  women who choose tattooing as a way of overcoming their pain. Breast surgeries like mastectomies can leave women with scars and a reminder of their ordeal, yet more and more women have chosen to have these scars turned into testimonies of their strength by having them tattooed. Mastectomy tattoos are a fantastic example of the power tattooing has and one artist has taken this to new heights.

Tattoo artist Brett Murdock usually charges $125 for an hours session at Waldo's Darkside Tattoo but decided that anyone seeking a mastectomy tattoo would not have to pay. Murdock's wife, Rachael Frederick, had a mastectomy herself and continues to fight her own personal battle with cancer. Making the announcement on Craigslist, Murdock put up the following advert:

“I have been tattooing for over ten years (both locally and in Hawaii, where I was trained), and would be happy to provide my services FREE OF CHARGE to clients who have lost one or both of their breasts due to mastectomy.”

Murdock's offer is a testimony to both his and his wife's character but also to the healing ability tattoos have. Tattoos are at their foundations a celebration, a celebration of art, personality and life itself, they hold in them a power to help people get through some of the hardest times of their lives and come out the other side a better person.
