US Government Researching Tattoo Recognition Software!!

Tattoos and breaking the law cross over more often than is perhaps wanted. Criminals have more tattoos than the general population in America and the US government plans to take advantage of this. The FBI has announced that it is joining forces with a number of private and academic firms to create computer software that could identify people based on their tattoos!!

Could identifying tattoos really decrease criminal activity?

It is said the software could also aid in search and rescue efforts after a natural disaster, though the principle aim remains to capture those wanted by the law, it would also make an easier task of identifying gang members!! The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), teamed up with the FBI to hold a  challenge workshop that gave an opportunity to universities and companies to demonstrate the results of their research into tattoo-matching technology. Of course when catching criminals finger prints and DNA are the go to areas, but if neither of them can be obtained then tattoos could fill the void. For instance, if a wanted bank robber is known to have a tattoo of a dragon then the new software could search CCTV footage and government databases locating the tattoo in question.

The groups that participated in the challenge were given only descriptions and partial images of tattoos and were then set to search databases to match them, some of the groups achieved an incredible match accuracy of 90%! So what does this mean? Will there be a CSI Tattoo... who knows! The research is only at its beginnings but we could soon see computer software catching criminals based on their ink!!
