10 Misconceptions About Tattooed People
Permanent piece of art on your body, you are a part of the worlds growing tattoo population - Let's face it, tattooed people are awesome!!
People who have tattoos are commonly some of the most laid back, respectful and kind individuals around, they're also not likely to pass judgement based solely on appearance!
However there are those, frequently without tattoos, who will happily pass judgement, offer insights into their own views on tattoos and outright question your choice of ink, but what's life without a few challengers and misconceptions aye! So sit back and enjoy these 10 misconceptions about tattooed people and see how many you've encountered!!
1. We're All Eager To Talk About Our Tattoos
For some strange reason people are just dying to know what your tattoo means to you and why you got it, but what they don't seem to understand is that tattoos can be a rather private thing and talking and sharing every tiny detail about the experience is not something many want to do!.. Yes we got a tattoo, but no; we don't want to spend 60 minutes going through its symbolism!!!
2. We've Served Prison Time and Are In A Gang
Recent from Funny
Admittedly this one seems rather extreme, but there are still people who see tattoos as the mark of a criminal and anyone who has a tattoo must surely be an ex-con or gangster. The sad truth however is that we are just normal boring people who happen to decorate our skin with ink... not that exciting really
3. We're Unable To Get A 'Real Job'
Perhaps one of the most common questions tattooed people here is something along the lines of 'how are you going to get a job with that tattoo?'... In reality the answer is pretty simple, we're going to apply for a job like anyone else, wear nice clothes for the interview and let our skills and qualifications do the talking! To borrow the words of Bob Dylan 'the times they are a changin', tattoos aren't as taboo as they once were and the world is a more accepting place, if someone won't hire you because of a tattoo then maybe it's a good thing, why would you want to work for someone who judges on appearance!!
4. We're Spontaneous and Make Irrational Decisions
A small percentage of people do get tattoos as a spur of the moment decision but for the most part getting a tattoo is a long process. People spend months deciding what they want and where they want it! Just because we have a tattoo does not mean we make crazy decisions, 'yes I have a tattoo...sure I'll try your rope-less bungee jump'... NO!! Tattooed people think the same as anyone else, tattoos don't affect your brain or mentality!!
5. We All Have A Tattoo Regret
It's true the laser removal business has been booming in recent years but that doesn't mean everyone with a tattoo has some regret! The only people who really regret their tattoos are the ones who rush the process, get the wrong thing or go to a bad artist! For the majority of tattooed people regret is no issue! ...The only tattoo regret I have is being busy this weekend and having to book a later appointment for my next tattoo!
6. We All Love Pain
While at the doctors for an injection the doctor said to me 'You've got tattoos so this won't hurt'... 'Why yes, because I have tattoos you pushing that needle into my skin will feel like a kitten licking my arm'... People with tattoos are not super humans with incredible pain thresholds and a love of all things that hurt us. We feel pain like anyone else, and while it is true tattoos are painful it is wise to remember people don't get them because of the pain!!
7. We Have Crazy Personal Lives
For the more conservative individual a tattoo is the sign of a crazy personal life, 'oh they have a tattoo sleeve, they must attend month long parties and backroom orgies' ...Or as tattoos are for everyone regardless of their private lives they could be a high court judge who spends their free time attending knitting classes! Tattoos cater for all people, so while some tattooed people live off the wall lives others go about their day like anyone else.
8. We Are Desperate For Attention
It's a known fact that people get tattooed for the benefits of others, they get them so people will crowd round them and shower them with love and attention...WRONG! People get tattoos because they appreciate body art and tattooing as an art form, they get tattooed for personal significance, they get tattooed for themselves and no one else!
9. We Know Everything and Anything About Tattoos
Of course someone with tattoos is more likely to know things about tattooing than someone without any tattoos, but equally some people get tattoos and have no real interest in the wider tattooing world. Yes it is a safe bet that someone with a sleeve will know a few things about tattooing but they are not a walking encyclopedia of artists, styles and history! We have tattoos, we are not a walking, talking tattoo know it all!!
10. We Are All Artists
An odd encounter many tattooed people have had is someone assuming they are an incredible artist because they have tattoos or being constantly asked if they designed their tattoos themselves. Yeah I decorate my body but I struggle to draw a semi-decent stickman, why would I try and draw my own Japanese dragon when I have a kick ass tattoo artist who can do a better job in 5 minutes than I could do in a lifetime!
