September 10 is World Suicide Awareness Day. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the world. It is often linked with mental illness, often when left untreated. The late Robin Williams suffered the same fate, which left many shocked by his decision. And recently, a young woman from Oregon opened up a whole conversation about coping with mental illness, namely depression, through a creative tattoo.

Here are some other individuals who chose to document their battle with mental illness through tattoos and also, some ideas for you if you're considering a tattoo that will beautifully represent your own personal struggles.

The King of Hearts is also known as a “The Suicide King” due to a mistake in its printing in the early days. Contrary to what it suggests, “The Suicide King” wasn't really very suicidal. As written in this theory, ‘he is not killing himself, but recovering from an attempt on his life.’ It's also regarded as simply a gesture that suggests he's ready to attack. A very powerful symbol that could stand for a survivor's will to fight back.
