But Jens hadn't always lived a disciplined life with a sense of purpose. Like many of us, he had gone through serious discord and inner struggles. There's a story behind the mask of tattoos that cover his face.

When he was ten, Jens' mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He was very close with his mother so when she finally passed away when he was 24 from years of being bound to a wheelchair, Jens was left utterly devastated. From there, things started going downhill for him.

Jens soon got involved with local gangs and it didn't take long for him to end up in jail—a four-year term for his involvement. “I lost myself and ended up in prison. But when I was in jail, I was offered some cognitive behavioral therapy,” he tells Mirror.

“The therapy changed my life and the way that I thought. It made me want to help others to become stronger, fitter and more balanced version of themselves.”

That was three years ago. Jens did recover at an incredible pace, intent on turning his life around. He's been fascinated with bodybuilding since he was a child, admiring the bulk physiques of villains in cartoon shows more than the lean, graceful bodies of the heroes. He did lifted a bit in his teens but it wasn't something he really took seriously. Now, he's given a second chance to pursue it.

Before taking the next necessary steps even further, Jens knew he had to do something about the facial tattoos he acquired before his jail sentence. This is where he trusted his tattoo artist brother to make something else out of it that will mask his past. They finally settled on a Maori-inspired facial tattoo.

But we can't have the Beast without the Beauty now, can we? Jens found love in Frederikke, a fellow tattooed fitness enthusiast. For the most part, Frederikke helps Jens with most of his meal preparations. They've been together for two years now.

Things could have turned out very differently if it weren't for Jens' willpower and determination. He could have crawled back to the rough life he knew in the streets. He wouldn't have had the 45,000 followers who looks up to him and calls him “Jens the Beast” and many of whom he inspired to challenge their bodies and push the limits.

“My transformation in itself is not over yet, I still have a lot more work to do. There’s never ending battle between the current me against the better, stronger, bigger version of me that I know I can become,” he says.
