Fine Artists Take On Tattoos: Emily Winfield Martin

katievidan in Stories

The fine artist featured this week is Emily Winfield Martin, a Portland-based artist whose soft, moody paintings instantly caught my eye.

Martin is influenced by a plethora of things- "fairy tales, myths, music, illustrations from the late 19th century through mid 20th century, her favorite films, and autobiography" are listed on her website as her greatest inspirations. One thing NOT listed here, surprisingly (given the paintings shown in this post) is tattoos!

Among her dreamy paintings of children, nature, monsters, and fantastical scenes are quite a few beautiful tattooed portraits. While they're obviously not her main focus, greatly outweighed by other (equally as beautiful) subject matter- they are absolutely fucking stunning and deserve some serious recognition. That's what I'm here for.

Whether covering elegant, poised ladies, a pair of distant lovers, or a bearded hottie- Marin has depicted tattoos in her own way, managing effortlessly to keep them soft, whimsical and painterly. She stays 100% true to her artistic style while seamlessly incorporating the badassery that are tattoos.

Also, GREAT NEWS! If you love her paintings as much as I do, you can head over to her Etsy shop and pick up a few prints of your own! Who doesn't need some pretty things for their walls, anyway?
