Striking Model Moniesse On Her Tattoos and Scarification
Stunning beauty Moniasse wears her ink and scars proudly on her body. This is the story behind her scarification and tattoos
Artist and model Laurence Sessou aka ‘Moniasse’ is a French born artist and model now living in London, England but she has family roots in West African Republic, Benin. Moniasse has always had a fascination with the human body and healing, and before she recently branched out into the modeling world she was a Neuromuscular Therapist for 10 years.
Her modelling career took off three years ago in Mexico when a friend simply suggested she tried it out. Her unique look and strong features make her a fascinating model to look at. She has numerous tattoos...and scarification done on her back and chest.
Moniasse's first contact with body modification came from her own family. Her African ancestry was always present in her family through her Mom who had scars on her temples and her Dad's family had scars on their cheeks, which were markings of their tribes. Her first tattoos picturing two small Egyptian ankhs on both wrists, were done at when she was 21, then her arm tattoos came a couple years later. The left arm was tattooed by Sanya Youali in Mexico and the right by London based artist Touka Voodoo.
Her step into body modification shall be found in her deep spirituality and personal self-expression. Scarification is a strong way to express yourself. She began her scarification with body modification artist Lestyn Flye in London. In an article for Afropunk Magazine, she wrote herself she explained...

"I wanted to walk on this modern world honoring my ancestry... Receiving a scar is a beautiful ritual and painful process, especially when the anesthetic doesn’t work! I think it is important to feel these things; it is an initiation, this experience made me realize how strong I can be"
Back Scar: Moniesse calls this her map of a spiritual journey. The cross in the center is a Chakana the center of the fire of life. The corners of the Earth are shown in the four arrows and the flowers represent the power of natural medicine. The scar is a representation of the shared beliefs she has with her ancestors about the connection with Mother Nature, life and energy.
Chest Scar:The form on her chest was inspired by the female reproductive system and reflects to source of life. The shape right in the middle of her chest is to honor the female pleasure center, the clitoris.
Moniesse says the most challenging part of the whole process was healing which took almost a year. When the keloid begins to form, which is the raised scar tissue you see after the cutting is made, it comes with a lot of pain and discomfort. Using mind over matter meditation, helped her cope with the pain both during and after and despite it all, she says the process was magical.
Moniesse's ancestral history influences everything she does today. Her healing work, modelling and art, basically her whole life and you can see it in her photos. She transmits every ounce of that energy in her work. I think we might be seeing more of this stunning beauty very soon...watch out for this rising star.
