You might have already heard about David Ores, but in case you haven't, we're here to tell you he is doing pretty great things.

David Ores, also known as Dr. Dave is a general practitioner (and avid tattoo collector) by trade, who is also in the business of removing tattoos. He is the founder of Fresh Start, a not-for-profit organization, and nationwide community program that helps ex- gang members, the previously incarcerated, and victims of human trafficking transition back into society by assisting in the removal of unwanted tattoos associated with a bitter past. The program is based on the idea that offers FREE tattoo removal for those looking for gainful employment, and to turn their lives around.

Fresh Start began when a former client of Ores' had asked him for a favor. The clients friend, a former gang member was desperately searching for a job, but had the tops of his knuckles tattooed with the words "BABY CRIP" -  a deal breaker for employers. The man wanted the tattoo removed, but could not afford the treatments - until Dr. Ores offered to remove it free of charge. Soon after, he would receive emails from around the globe. There were many people in a similar predicament, desperate to make a change.

"People who have these machines are standing at the edge of a dock with life preservers in their hands, and there are people drowning directly in front of them. Why wouldn’t they—why wouldn’t I—just throw the life preserver into the water? It’s not costing anything." - David Ores, GQ Magazine

But why does the Fresh Start matter? The return to prison rate for ex-offenders who are not able to find a job ( likely hindered by facial, prison, or gang-related tattoos ) is roughly about 90%. With employment, that statistic is drastically reduced to about 15%. Tattoo removal allows this bracket of people to overcome a large barrier to employment and as a result, they are able to change their lives for the better.

But all tattoos are not fair game. To fit the criteria of a proper candidate for Fresh Start the tattoo in question must be on your face, neck, or hands... the areas often referred to"job-stoppers".

So far Ores has helped upwards of 2,000 clients. If you or someone you know is struggling with an unwanted tattoo, visit Fresh Start Tattoo Removal to find a technician near you.

"Removing tattoos is just a small part of a larger thing. And it’s ten seconds. Ten seconds! And you can change someone’s life. And aside from being compassionate, it’s also financially clever. It’s just cheaper, for everybody, if more people are working than are in prison. It’s the right thing to do." - Dr. David Ores
