Kevin Sloan is a fine artist whose ornate paintings immediately caught my eye.
Exploring the interaction between the natural and man-made worlds, Sloan produces paintings in a style which he's coined as "allegorical realism." In these incredibly lush paintings- exploding with imagery and texture- Sloan portrays animals as fragile, decorated objects.. much resembling fine china. Naturally, though, my brain saw tattoos.
"I’ve created a body of work that speaks about our modern technological environment and simultaneously presents images of natural beauty and mystery. In these tableaus, the natural world of animals and plants interacts awkwardly with the man-made objects and yet, a tenuous balance is achieved."
Again, naturally, my brain somehow related this back to tattoos. Natural beauty interacting with man-made technology... Sounds a little bit like the art of tattooing to me, right? But hey, I write for a Tattoo website. I'm shamelessly biased.
Regardless of the actual reasoning behind these beautifully decorated creatures, and whether or not it pertains at ALL to tattooing- Kevin Sloan's paintings are fucking gorgeous. The meticulousness behind each tiny detail- from the intricate designs on the animals to the itty bitty leaves on the foliage... they truly are unbelievable works of art.
I've rounded up some of my favorite paintings here- but you should definitely go check out his website to see more of his kickass work.
