Artist Saira Hunjan Tapped by Luxury Brand Tod's for Collaboration

Since its inception in the late 1920s, the luxury leather goods brand Tod’s has been at the forefront of defining everything classically Italian prep, which is why it’s so refreshing to learn that CEO Diego Della Valle has called on the help of British tattoo artist Saira Hunjan for an especially exciting collaboration.

To commemorate the opening of their new London flagship store, and coinciding with the opening of London Fashion Week, Tod’s has employed the help of Hunjan to add a bit of flair to their classic Double T bags by tattooing various mythological creatures onto the bags themselves, including a take on the brand’s signature lion. Available in a very limited run, each bag takes Hunjan approximately twenty-two hours to individually tattoo. After carefully tracing her designs repeatedly, Hunjan uses a real tattoo machine to transform the leather into a beautiful work of art. After experimenting with different treated leathers, including alligator and crocodile, Hunjan found that minimally treated calf-leather produced the best results, adding that she even “[uses] Vaseline to lubricate the skin to help the needle penetrate a bit more.”

The collection, which is available in a very limited run, retails for around $2,500 per bag, and is currently available in stores and online. A more commercial version is set to debut in their resort collection in December.
