Lawd knows we are suckers for anything old school or ignorant style, but when you combine the two together, it’s like we’re kids in a candy store. Yeah Dope is a fine artist/tattooist based out of Adelaide, Australia, and his work fits our old school meets ignorant style bill to a T. While his tattoos take on more of a classic old school style, with the likes of tigers, nude women, and simplistic interpretations of cartoon characters dotting his portfolio, his fine art has a definitive ignorant style aspect to it. Using hues of baby pink and hilarious text, he creates our dream fine art hybrid.
Calling on everyday subjects as inspiration, Yeah Dope turns the mundane into the comically relatable. Cartons of cigarettes, graves, alarm clocks, and Nokia cell phones of yesteryear are painted in various tones of pink with phrases like, “See You Soon” or “Fuck” incorporated into them creating a wonderfully lighthearted take on everyday life.
While old school meets ignorant style meets fine art isn’t necessarily a new fixture in the art world — as evident in the work of Spacegoth or Sean From Texas — it is one that we can relate to on a genuine level. Because to be honest, who among us hasn’t hit the snooze button five too many times only to realize it’s ten minutes after you were supposed to leave for work, or received the dreaded text that we all know is coming, but hope to never receive. But that’s the beauty in Yeah Dope’s work. It is utterly relatable.
While his fine art isn’t available for tattooing purposes, originals can be purchased in a few art galleries in Australia and are priced around $100 each. We don’t know about you, but we’re thinking one of these babies will look A++ above our sofa.
