We’ve said it before, and we’ll continue to say it until the dark Lord Lucifer finally hears our unrelenting songs of praise — we live for dark tattoos. Now, don’t get us wrong, we’re 100% for tonally dark tattoos as well, the greyer the better as far as we’re concerned, but we’re referring to subjectively dark pieces, the kind that makes you seriously question what role you would play in the coming apocalypse, whether you’re of the light or dark, and which variety of monster you’ve got a bit of in you. Ok, so maybe we’ve been watching too much Penny Dreadful on Netflix, but suffice it to say that we’ve been doing some research as far as dark tattoos go, and Happypets Studio out of Lausanne, Switzerland is producing some of the most beautifully dark and sinister tattoos out there.
Working exclusively with black ink, the artists at Happypets Studio delve heavily into the occult. Demons, skeletons, apocalypse riders, and oddities dot their work, unearthing a sense of sorrow and impending doom with it. Tattooing in an illustrative style, Happypets creates incredible monsters using artfully executed techniques like line work, perfect shading, and impeccable use of negative space.
While all of the tattoos produced at Happypets are of the black variety, what’s truly impressive is that they’re able to create such demonic creatures without them ever falling flat due to their monochrome nature. Haunting renditions of dead foxes, possessed porcelain dolls, and the Roman fates (a female personification of human destiny). All of these elements together create a harmonious hum of dark forces at work, and the results are bewitching.
And while we’re all for a good seance and maybe a blood sacrifice or two, sometimes the only way to satisfy your bloodlust and insatiable appetite for satanic rituals is with a tattoo, and we can’t think of a better place than Happypets.
