If Selena Gomez’s goal was to walk into the tattoo shop, sit down with her artist, and challenge them to create a tattoo with the most meaning per square inch, well, then she succeeded tremendously. If her goal was to get a visually impressive tattoo…. Not so much.
On Monday, Gomez was joined by Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman, her co-stars from the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, as they got matching semicolon tattoos. For the last couple of years, people have been getting semicolon tattoos as a way to raise awareness for depression and suicide prevention. It’s a beautiful sentiment, the idea being that a semicolon marks the place where a sentence (or life) could end, but instead it goes on.
That’s the kind of statement you want to scream at the top or your lungs, not relegate to just a tattoo on a really tiny piece of real estate on your wrist. Hell, the tattoos are so small that you can barely even tell that they are tattoos, let alone semicolons. Gomez’s future is sure to include well-meaning folks handing her napkins and discreetly telling her she has something on her wrist.
Again, we’re not trying to shit on Gomez and her co-stars for getting tattoos with so much symbolic meaning, that would be horrible. What we’re trying to do is urge them — and the rest of their tiny tattoo obsessed friends in Hollywood — to be bolder with their tattoo decisions. You can afford the best artists in the world, go and get some amazing work that will have people drop their jaws and demand to talk about it. Because you know they’ll ask what the tattoo means (because everyone always does), then you have a phenomenal platform to raise awareness for the cause.
After all, if we’re going to have to write about Gomez’s tattoos the very least she can do is make them a bit more interesting, right?
