Amputee Tattoos Help Survivors Make The Best Of Things

A look at some inventive transformations of tragedy into art via tattoos.

We humans are a resilient bunch on many levels. Biologically speaking, a human being can survive a lot. Our immune systems are constantly fighting on the front lines of a microscopic war that few can comprehend, and our physical form is great at dealing with trauma. We can lose limbs and live full lives.

Technology has come a long way in helping to accomplish just that. Prosthetic technology has been rapidly advancing in the last few decades. Amputees are now being fitted with state of the art replacement limbs, some even controllable by thought. We stand at the dawn of the age of cyborgs, and it is not inconceivable that in the near future prosthetic limbs will be able to greatly outperform our natural limbs.

Amputation isn’t easy to brush off emotionally, though. We lack the ability to regrow our limbs like our reptilian overlords, but with an indomitable spirit, many are able to make the most of a bad situation and live full lives. Though being an amputee is a huge challenge, some deal with it and reclaim their bodies in a very interesting way – by tattooing the flesh that remains after an amputation.

We admire those who have taken the opportunity to make light of such physical tragedy with a tattoo. Appreciate not only the art and the inventive uses of their amputations in the following gallery, but also the spirit of these individuals.

We salute these individuals who have taken back their bodies after horrific trauma, and love the fact that they did it with tattoos. So, remember, even if some tragedy befalls you, you can still make the most out of your life. Just like this tattoo artist in France who lost his arm and was fitted with a cyborg tattoo machine as a replacement.
