These apple pie tattoos look good enough to eat, or make love to

Have you ever realized that something you thought to be true your whole life wasn’t? I had one of those moments the other day when I used the phrase “As American as apple pie” in a headline and immediately thought, “I bet apple pie isn’t even American.” And it’s not! It predates America by quite some time. In order to shed light on this nationalistic falsehood, we’ve baked up this image gallery of apple pie tattoos.

The first written recipe for apple pie dates back to 1381, some 400 hundred years before America was a country. In fact, recipes for apple pie that predate America pop up in a variety of places including England, Holland, France, and Sweden. Immigrants from these places all brought apple pie recipes to America. They also brought apples, as edible apples are not native to America. So, how, when, and why did apple pie become “American?”

Like so many other things (such as native lands and parts of sovereign Mexico, for example) America just took apple pie as its own. The phrase “as American as apple pie,” didn’t even show up until the early 20th century, giving people plenty of time to forget about the actual origins of apple pie. The phrase didn’t come into widespread use until World War II. When asked why they were fighting the war, many soldiers latched onto the response “For mom and apple pie.” This is the vector by which the saying came to prevalence.

But who cares about boring history and the nuances of nationality? Pie is fucking delicious. Just look at some of these apple pie tattoos. They look good enough to eat. So flaky, so crispy, so tart… These are truly some mouthwatering tattoos.

How many times have you read one of our great articles on food tattoos and walked away hungry? We’re hoping this selection of apple pie tattoos did just that. They may not actually be all that American, but deliciousness is universal.
