SESSIONS: Zoe Bean's Meticulous Dotwork

In our latest SESSIONS, we watch tattooist Zoe Bean of Brooklyn's 8 of Swords bring one of her hyper-detailed illustrations to life.

Anyone who’s spent even a moment with artist Zoe Bean knows how closely she holds 8 of Swords, the shop she’s been working out of for the last five years, to her heart.

Having been tattooing for 10 years now, Bean has found sanctuary in the cozy Brooklyn tattoo shop. “I think the shop is pretty magical,” she explains. “It’s super warm, and we’re really a community of people who are all trying to make beautiful tattoos and leave the ego part out of it.”

Working in an environment built on a foundation of positivity and empowerment, the 8 of Swords artists are much more like family than coworkers. Bean has thrived in this setting, evolving not only as a tattooer but also never wavering from the pursuit of her first love — fine art. Tattooing in a shop conducive to creative growth has given Bean the perfect situation to build a dedicated following who keeps coming back for tattoos in her signature style — extremely fine linework and millions of tiny, tiny dots. “I like mark making,” Bean says. “Any kind of fine-line, hyper-detailed stuff."

A self proclaimed collector, Bean finds inspiration in everything from Victorian botanicals and vintage illustrations to nostalgic personal items and feels perpetually grateful to have found clients who allow her to translate these passions into tattoos on their bodies. Case in point, the client she’s tattooing in this episode of SESSIONS spotted one of Bean’s illustrations on Instagram and quickly inquired about having it tattooed.

With 10 years experience under her belt and limitless inspiration to draw from between her extensive fine art background, ever-supportive peers and her husband Sweety, a tattooer at yet another beloved NYC shop, New York Hardcore — we’re excited to see what else is in store for Bean.

We spent the day with Bean at 8 of Swords and watched one of her illustrations come to life — see for yourself in our latest SESSIONS.
