My Mom Thinks These Milhouse Tattoos Are Cool

We look at the beloved sidekick to Bart and the sweet fan tattoos he inspires

The world of the Simpsons boasts the richest treasure trove of supporting characters of any fictional universe. Many of the denizens of Springfield have become stars in their own right. Today we’re taking a look at a favorite of ours here at the Tattoodo offices, one Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten. And that can mean only one thing boiled down into two fantastic words – Milhouse tattoos.

Series creator Matt Groening designed Milhouse for a Butterfinger commercial in 1988, making him one of the few characters on the show to have existed in short cartoon form before the the first season of The Simpsons in 1989. Groening chose the name because it was the most unfortunate one he could think of.

Milhouse has become a mainstay of The Simpsons supporting cast. As Bart’s best friend, he often finds himself a comedic foil to the elder Simpson child’s prepubescent meanness. His life outside of this friendship is a bleak landscape of sadness. His parents split up, he has an unrequited crush on Lisa Simpson, and no one seems to really like him.

Except Simpsons fans around the world love Milhouse and over the past twenty-something seasons of the hit show he has become one its most popular characters. Though it can be argued that peak Milhouse parallels peak Simpsons (seasons 3-10), the character still brightens the show when he’s on the screen, even in the most cringe-worthy episodes.

It all boils down to the fact that Milhouse is the archetype of the lovable loser. We’re always rooting for him, even though we know things can never really go all that well for him. This is a direct analogy for the way we feel about ourselves, so it makes perfect sense that we all love Milhouse, some of us more than others as these totally rad Milhouse tattoos indicate.

If these Milhouse tattoos leave you wanting more, there currently exists a fantastic five minute clip of his best moments from the first nine seasons on YouTube.
