'The Tattoo Shop' Artist Spotlight: Jacob Wiman

In this artist spotlight for The Tattoo Shop we take a look at the life and times of Jacob Wiman.

In Episode 3 of 'The Tattoo Shop' we get to meet Jacob Wiman, a 27 year old Swedish tattoo artist with a bold stand-out style that’s highly respected within the tattooing community. Known for his exceptionally colorful, clean style that hinges on Neo-Traditional, he continually creates vivid pieces that borrow from a variety of styles to encapsulate a style all his own. Not quite realism, abstract, or cartoon, his tattoos are immediately recognizable. “With my work I try to bring in a lot of black, simple lines to read and simple emotions, like happy or sad or angry into my characters to make them relatable.” It’s clear that this is part of the reason why Jacob’s clients seek his time: the personality of his pieces practically makes them animated.

Growing up, watching his father tattoo and learning the ins and outs of tattoo shop life, he was immediately drawn to the art form. “I did my first tattoo when I was about 17 years old. It was a little script on a friend, and it was horrible, it was awful….but it was so much fun, I couldn’t stop ya know?” From humble beginnings to a world renowned tattoo artist, Jacob has clearly defined his style, and his particular interests. While at The Tattoo Shop, a client comes to get a wolf head tattoo and it’s another jaw-dropping beauty. “To me, it’s really important to balance the clients request with me enjoying the tattoo and the design so it will come out as something that we both love and enjoy because if I enjoy doing it, they’re gonna enjoy the end result.”

The filigree-like drool of a wolf head, the intense fighting eyes, white with anger, of a samurai Red Panda, the striking colors on the scales of snake so dramatic that it’s a wonder the reptile doesn’t simply slide off the skin and slither away. It’s these details that make Jacob’s oeuvre so profoundly special. Whether you like the style or not, his devotion and masterful craftsmanship is something to be admired and respected.
