Anti-Racist Tattoos Are Now More Important Than Ever

Anti-Racist Tattoos Are Now More Important Than Ever

We give mad props to anyone fighting racism in this country, with their voices or with tattoo ink

The events of this past weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia are equally troubling and sad. While America is great melting pot of people and ideas, this only works with full acceptance. America means many things to many different people, and sadly for some citizens of this country, America apparently means a land of white pride and nationalism. However, this is entirely antithetical to what America is and has become. This nation would crumble to dust without the contributions of all of its peoples and cultures. Hatred and bigotry have no place here. We’re looking at some anti-racist tattoos today because even though we rarely take public stances here at Tattoodo, we’re taking one now on the subject of racism and fascism. And our position basically boils down to “fuck this shit.”

As a country we have a sad history. We nearly wiped the Native American from the face of this planet because it seemed easier than trying to coexist. A great deal of this country’s early economical success was built upon the toil and blood of slaves from Africa. We had a war about this in which Americans killed Americans to secure the rights of all. The losing side of that battle is nothing to be celebrated with statues. There are those who claim that it is their right to celebrate their heritage, but we are far removed from those events by 150 years. There is no good reason to take pride in your ancestors fighting on the losing side of a war that was essentially about their right to own other human beings.

Robert E. Lee was no hero. Take a look at this quote from the general and try to fathom why we should honor him with statues:

"The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known and ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.”

Is it any wonder that where some misguided souls see a heritage to be proud of the rest of us see nothing but the celebration of racism?

The fact that white nationalists have been rearing their ugly heads lately isn’t surprising in this political climate. We can see how they feel empowered at the moment, but to think that the rest of us will allow them to do so unchecked is pure delusion. This is one of the few modern cases of clear cut good vs. evil. There is no gray area. They will be stopped, of this we have complete faith. Already in the wake of Charlottesville planned white nationalist rallies have been canceled. Those who participated are already being identified and facing consequences. America is serving notice to these misguided fools who have fallen prey to an ideology that seemingly gives them a voice the rest of society has denied them that there is no place for their hatred in this great country of ours.

And what better way to let them know than with a sweet anti-racism tattoo? All of the people in these pictures are heroes to us. As is Heather Heyer, the young woman murdered by a white supremacist in Charlottesville. And so is everyone who takes the time out of their life to punch a Nazi in the face. Because fuck white pride, fuck racism, and fuck hatred. That’s not what this country is about, and America is slowly but surely sending the message that these ideologies have no place in the great US of A in the 21st century.

We are forever grateful to those on the front-lines of this fight. We give our unconditional support to all the active Antifa movements in this country. And we give a big Tattoodo salute to anyone out there sporting an anti-racist tattoo.
