ARTSHARE: Tim Beck's Fantastic Flash

Tattoo Artists1 min Read

Tim Beck is an artist best known for his versatility, but his flash art is a love letter to old school.

Tim Beck’s versatility knows no limits. Where most artists tend to focus and hone in on a single style that they feel most confident in, Beck excels at them all, never focusing on a single style for too long. In the past, he’s been known to create embroidery inspired tattoos that would fool even the keenest grandmother, realism that would give a camera a run for its money, and colorful illustrative blooms that look as if they’ve been plucked straight from a field. Interestingly enough, Beck tends to focus on one particular style when it comes to his flash art, never wavering or switching allegiance to the american traditional style.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Beck piece if there wasn’t a twist, and never one to disappoint, he continually delivers. Beck actually paints all of his flash work on antique paper, ensuring that each piece of art has an antiquated feel to it that adds to the general old school motif. Using classic tattoo imagery like kewpie dolls, soaring eagles, and lady heads, Beck illustrates his own personal love letter to the of mother of modern tattoo imagery — old school. Calling on ghosts of decades past like Hildebrandt and O’Reilly, Beck creates beautiful interpretations of old school subjects. Another interesting feature — nearly every piece of Beck’s flash is adorned with a tiny antique tag sticker, as if you were purchasing it direct from one of the old school masters themselves.

Beck’s portfolio as a whole is all encompassing, making sure to touch on every style at least once — and with impeccable skill we might add — but his flash art has always been and will forever be a tribute to the roots of the tattoo community. Now, if you’ll all kindly bow your heads and show a bit of respect...
