It’s always really interesting to compare an artist’s flash with their tattoos as well as their fine art. Sometimes it’s similar, and sometimes it’s so wildly contrasting that you’d never guess all three were made by the same artist. Shawn McDonald is of the latter variety. While his tattoos and flash are all relatively similar, his fine art tends to take on a life of its own, often taking on more of a realistic approach, but that’s a story for a later date. It’s Friday, and as we all know that can only mean one thing — flash.
Working out of Magnetic Tattoo in Fort Collins, Colorado, McDonald’s work is predominantly traditional in style. Sexually charged and riddled with with references to promiscuity and vices, McDonald’s flash is, at the risk of sounding like an incredibly prudish mid-western mom, slightly naughty. Illustrations of naked women, beautiful roses, what we can only assume is a reference to weed (note: the grim reaper smoking a pipe who promises he’ll always be there for you. Reaper? Reefer? HA!), and several large jungle animals, McDonald’s vices are incredibly tempting if not completely distracting.
While the subject matter of a good piece of flash is arguably the most important factor, they would be nothing if it weren’t for the technique and incredible attention to detail that compose them. McDonald knows this all too well, and takes time to fully develop a character, breathing life into it with articulate detail. This is best seen in his version of a diamond back rattle snake, which takes a few artistic liberties — namely the coloring — but as a whole is artfully rendered with impressive attention to detail. The belly of the snake, its unique pattern, as well as the slight speckling that covers its body all contribute to its undeniable intrigue. So if you’re ever in Colorado, be sure to stop by Magnetic Tattoo to pay McDonald a visit. His flash art is just one of several vices that are available in the state, if you catch our drift.
