Suffice to say: beauty is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder. Margaret Wolfe Hungerford was the first person to say this proverb, and she was darn right! Some people like Blackwork, or Dark Art, or whatever! It all depends on what you personally resonate with...what you love to look at most.

This world is interesting and fantastic because there are so many wonderfully different things out there to enjoy! But we were curious still...so we did a little digging and found some cool quotes about beauty that you may enjoy. One of these is from Umberto Eco, a famous Italian author who penned two books that sort of have to do with what we're talking about here, "On Beauty" and "On Ugliness". He brought together a bunch of different examples of European art to make his point which, in his opinion, is that, "Beauty is, in some ways, boring. Even if its concept changes through the ages, nevertheless a beautiful object must always follow certain rules … Ugliness is unpredictable and offers an infinite range of possibilities. Beauty is finite. Ugliness is infinite, like God.” Food for thought, for sure.

Of course, a lot of people think beauty has nothing to do with whats going on physically at all. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, an American Swiss psychiatrist is quoted as saying, "The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.” Interesting...but it doesn't really help us when we're looking at art. Or does it? Perhaps the whole "beautiful tattoos" thing just refers to the feelings we get when we're looking at an awesome piece? Because, surely, emotions and feelings have a lot to do with art, and why we like to look at it so much. Especially tattoos...these pieces can be inspiring, transformative, and empowering. And if a tattoo makes you feel all those great things, doesn't that make it beautiful?
