It's no secret that women have been, historically and factually, left over of the arts scene more often than not. Although we've been the subject of many a piece, on average only 3-5% of the work in permanent collections in the United States and Europe is artwork created be women. But change is at hand, and there are many strong voices of the community empowering female artists through exhibitions, events, articles and more. One of those voices is that of Elvia Iannaconne, no stranger to the fine art or tattoo community. Well known for her incredible portrait photographs documenting tattoo culture, Elvia has curated the Ladies, Ladies! Art Show to support the juggernaut of lady tattooer creativity.
Hosted at the MF Gallery, a mainstay of underground pop art since 2003, Elvia has brought together a bevy of talent. From Italian bombshell Lara Scotton, to blue collar proponent Katie Gray, the list of artists is astounding. Katya Krasnova, Virginia Elwood, Miss Juliet, Olivia Olivier, Electric Martina, Totemica...the roster is, without exaggeration, a creative powerhouse. In an age where women's rights continue to be questioned, and the female identity/body is still, generally, being controlled from outside rather from within, it's events such as these that brings communities and people together in an inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
At this turning point in history, togetherness, diversity, empowerment, and creativity is what makes change imminent. And considering the images included in this article are only a taste of what is to come, and as the lineup is 56 female voices deep, your presence will only enhance a seriously cool endeavor thanks to Elvia and the artists involved. For un-cropped, uncensored artistic goodness: be at MF Gallery in Brooklyn, NY September 15th. The event will no doubt be a welcoming experience for all to share in and celebrate.
