On the Frontlines of Tim Sharky’s Zen War

Stories2 min Read

Once a strong man loan-shark, this tattoo-covered internet celebrity spends his nights feeding stray dogs… and banging hookers.

Pattaya, Thailand is a place of magic, if your definition of magic includes having sex with a prostitute. The resort city, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, is a hot destination for sex tourists, with one British tabloid recently calling Pattaya “the sex capital of the world.”  Though prostitution is illegal in the county, it flourishes freely in Pattaya. If you look past the bright lights and hot girls of dubious gender identity on a hot Pattaya night, you might notice a hulking figuring in the alleyways — a musclebound man of enormous size, in nothing but a pair of shorts, his whole body covered in tattoos, carrying gigantic arms bags of dog food.

The impressive figure, hunched down to hand feed the masses of stray dogs, belongs to Tim Ward, aka Tim Sharky. Through his instagram account, Sharky shares his passion for helping animals with the world – along with an equally-matched passion for Thai prostitutes.

The Shark’s story starts in Australia where he made his living as a loan shark, his personal website makes not-so-subtle references to “rumors” that Sharky was in with the underworld of the mob. After losing a large court case, he retreated to Pattaya to start a new life. It was here that he became an internet celebrity.

The oddest thing about Tim Sharky is that he, for better or worse, seems to be a man who knows what he wants out of life. Here is a man who truly enjoys what it is to be alive, enjoying the finer things in life – namely, feeding stray dogs and fucking prostitutes.

Sharky is covered in some very intimidating tattoos. Sprawled across his lower back are the words “fuck authority.” The phrase “self made” graces his knuckles. And on his stomach, just below an ever-exposed chest covered in traditional Maori tribal tattoos, lies the striking mantra of “zen war.”

There is more to The Shark than meets the eye. He clearly possesses a large heart and has a real passion for animals. But at the same time, he does not strike us as a man that you would ever want to cross.

Perhaps someday in the future when life has you down, you can think of a man halfway across the world — a man fighting a zen war against dog malnourishment. Think of Tim Sharky when you are at your lowest. There’s a strange reassurance in knowing that you get to share a world with someone like The Shark.
