New York City has a reputation for being a tough place to find success. With millions and millions of people flocking to the city to make their dreams come true, it can be a bleak city to attempt to find your footing. But for Red Baron Ink’s shop owner, Grant Lubbock, he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’ve always wanted to be on the East Coast,” Lubbock says. “It was my lifelong goal, and with that I figured if I can make it in New York, I can make it anywhere.”
The California native realized his dream of opening up the shop in 2013. Sure, it would have been easier to stay at home or set up shop somewhere with less cutthroat competition, but that’s not his style. “I was always just a renegade, just did what I wanted to do,” Lubbock says. That renegade spirit comes alive at Red Baron Ink.
You can find the Red Baron Ink Tattoo Shop in the Alphabet City neighborhood of NYC, not a long walk from the L train’s 1st Ave. stop. The shop is two locations, side by side, with four tattooing stations that are used by six artists in rotation. As far as specializations, take it from the shop’s owner, “We focus on Neo-Traditional. We also do some blackwork and fine line work as well, but the main focus is definitely Neo-Traditional.”
Appointments are a must at this shop, but you’re more than welcome to pop into the shop and chat about ideas to formulate a design in the future, but appointments are highly preferred. To book an appointment, a non-refundable $100 deposit is required, so it’s best to have your idea pretty well thought-out before you make an appointment on a whim.
As stated before, Red Baron Ink boasts a host of talented artists who specialize in the Neo-Traditional style, along with blackwork and fine line work. Six artists are rotated between the four seats available, so checking in ahead of time is key to ensure you see the tattoo artist you want.
Lubbock works with “clean lines, bright color, and or supersaturated black and grey.” He wants to create tattoos that will last a lifetime, and his style is suited for that goal. Janice Danger is the resident black linework tattooer, and David Tevenal brings his unique comic book/illustrative oriented style to the shop.
