Given the danger posed to civil liberties by the current political landscape of the United States, members of the tattoo community need to band together, like all of the individuals who participated in the recent Women’s March in Washington D.C., and take a stand on the issues that matter most, which is exactly what NYC’s Magic Cobra Tattoo Society is doing. The tattooists there are putting their skills to use to help support reproductive rights. Four members of their crew — Woodz, Ol Ash, Kati Vaughn, and Adam Korothy — will be tattooing some awesome flash designs for $40 a pop, and all the proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood.
The event will take place on February 8 from 2-7pm at Magick City, located at 37 Box St in Brooklyn, and it is part of a greater community effort to do something positive in these dark times. A nearby bar, Saint Vitus, is also participating in the charitable effort by throwing a party. “Generate some goddamn LIGHT with us in the midst of the unravelling, sinister, retrograde insane political fuckstorm we are now experiencing,” the bar said on its Instagram. “This is gonna be a fantastic multi-media event with incredible music, performance, drinks, and raffle stuff.” What could be more fun than getting a new tattoo and then drinking copious amounts while listening to some good music all for a great cause?
Riffing off of classic feminine motifs, the shop’s team has created several sheets worth of feminist body art. Examples include a pinup of a boxer, a perfume bottle, and the Wonder Woman insignia. They’ll be slinging out tattoos of these little designs on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you want one, try to get to Magick City early in the afternoon. You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to support Planned Parenthood’s efforts and get a badass banger while you’re at it.
Follow Magic Cobra on Instagram to keep up to date with all of the details for this event as the day approaches. Also, if you can’t make the event, any member of their team would gladly tattoo some feminist imagery on your body at a later date, so consider hitting up their shop, and throw a little cash to Planned Parenthood on your own time.
