TONIGHT: Thursday, May 16, 2019
Ami James will be making an appearance, along with Roxx, Adam Vu Noir, Kari Barba, and Takahiro Kitamura - panel organizer, moderator, owner of State of Grace, and co-producer of the convention - for a "discussion of the changes and challenges of tattoo art as it has evolved since the time of Lew the Jew." The talk will take place at The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco which currently has an exhibition that spotlights the pioneering efforts and work of the famed Bowery tattoo artist. "'Lew the Jew' (1880–1954) was one of the most influential artists tattooing in NYC’s Bowery at the beginning of the twentieth century. The exhibition includes previously unpublished and rare original tattoo artwork, photos, and correspondence between Lew and San Francisco tattooers “Brooklyn Joe” Lieber and C. J. ”Pop” Eddy."
The Bay Area Tattoo Convention itself is a treat not only for tattoo lovers, but tattoo artists as well. Dedicated to the history, culture, and contemporary aspects of tattoo art, this particular convention has a close knit family vibe brought together by those who are truly committed to this fine art form. Tattoo artists from around the globe will be attending including Tattoodo Ambassadors such as Tim Hendricks, Tine DeFiore, and Miss Juliet. Javier DeLuna, Zac Scheinbaum, Acetates, Chad Koeplinger, and Derek Noble are only a few of the stand out talent that will be attending this weekend.
Perhaps what makes this particular convention unique is not only the obvious hope to educate, inform and preserve tattooing through experiential and immersive activities, but the fact that the Bay Area hosts have put so much thought and effort into each aspect of the weekend. Not only is the convention tied to museums, gallery exhibitions, historical and archival research, but there is also an added eco concept. "The Saltwater Tattoo booth in the lobby next to the stencil booth will offer each artist the opportunity to make a custom supply bag, this will minimize waste and carbon footprint while still maintaining our high standards of hygiene!" Each artist will be able to pick up paper towels, alcohol pads, clip cord sleeves, and several more valuable items helping to make cross contamination and waste of lesser concern. It is attention to details such as this that makes each convention shine.
Another special attraction of this years Bay Area Tattoo Convention is the premier of Zac Scheinbaum's Afterlife Press Volume II tome which provides an in-depth look at the tattoo artists Chris Garver and Horitomo. Never before seen photographs, paintings, and stories about their lives and work are all including in this highly anticipated book. This exclusive pre-release will take place at the convention with Horitomo signing copies for those fortunate enough to get one!
For those who are serious about tattooing, and everything it encompasses, please make sure to check out this particular convention. This is a place where passion and creation merge, where true love for tattoos finds a home.
