Koi Tattoos

The image of the Koi fish is a rather popular motif in Japanese tattooing. Traditionally, the Koi symbolizes luck, and the ability to overcome great obstacles. Perhaps the most famous legend regarding this subject tells the tale of a Koi who succeeded in swimming up-river through the waterfalls known as The Dragons Gate, where he was awarded with transformation into a Dragon. With a nod to the legend, Koi are often found “swimming” upward in tattoos, although downward-facing Koi are also common.
