Kitsune yokai are Japanese fox spirits, thought to endow many mystical powers, superior intelligence, and if they live to 100 years they gain the ability to shape shift. There are many hundreds of years of folklore and stories about these beings, and as late the 1950s, fox spirit possession was a valid medical diagnosis in Japan.
