Coming from an arts oriented family of several generations,Original Smitty has been tattooing in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska since 1975, giving him a unique perspective of the art and craft of tattoo after 43 years of practicing it. Originally apprenticed under Bud Craig of Anchorage (formerly of "Tom & Jerry's Tattoo" of New Orleans) then receiving further instruction from the great P.A. Stephens of the Seattle Tattoo Emporium. Smitty then went on to work at Ace Tattoo with the late great Rio Degennaro before landing the shop manager position at the Everett Tattoo Emporium (formerly "Ancient Art") staying there for about 5 years. Then off to Anchorage Alaska where he opened "Alaska Tattoo" for a decent 7 year run. In the winter of 1998, Smitty moved back to the Seattle area to a little navy town called Bremerton, where the tattooist Don Nolan tattooed out of for many years. There, the current shop "Smitty's Place Tattoo" was opened in 99 and operates there to this day. His daughter now tattoos there, making it a generational shop. Some of the artists Smitty has worked with are: P.A. Stephens, Mike "Rollo" Malone, Terry Tweed, Hennig Jorgenson, Liora Mugrabi, Scary Dave Shore, Sailor Cam Cook, just to name a few.
Some of Smitty's apprentices are: Bonnie Smith, Jesse Dickson, Clae Welch, Lewie Hess, Kerry Linden, Michelle Garceau Hughes, Big Dano Stephens, just to name the favorites.
